Connecticut Birth Photographer | The baby is coming… Where’s the Midwife?

Sunday morning started out with a little shift of energy in the air. I wasn’t really sure what it was all about but the boys were playing so good with each other that I decided to take advantage of the moment and CLEAN. WHO does that?! I could have done my nails, taken a nice hot shower, sat and read a book, wrote in my journal… but NO, I had the need to tidy up. Jokingly I commented to some friends that I was nesting for my birth client who was due any day.

Fast forward to 5:30 that evening and I was getting out of the shower to 5 missed phone calls on my cell phone. SURE enough, it was Karine letting me know she thought her water had broke. YES! I KNEW IT! Today was the day!   I just waited for her to call me back to let me know they were getting on the road. 20 minutes later the text came in that they were heading out.  10 minutes after that her husband Alan called ” Cathy… we’re heading out ! ”  I replied ” Great ! I’ll see you up there. ”  Grabbing my jacket and a bottle of water for the 45 minute drive I start thinking to myself…. did he get my name wrong?  But whatever! His wife is in labor, I’ll give him a pass. lol

I arrive to the Connecticut Childbirth and Women’s Center in Danbury and I see one car. I get out and see it’s Karine and Alan and walk over. “No midwife yet?!” I ask. Alan looks at me and replies ” YEEEEAHHH…. slight mix up. Apparently when I called you, I thought I was calling the midwife. It was when I called her back to let her know we were here that she informed me that I never called her.”

OOPS!  Well now that explains the incorrect name when he called. So we had about 35 minutes remaining before the midwife was to arrive. In the meantime we knew Karine still had plenty of time and but I have to admit, I was entertaining the idea , just a little, about the possibility of delivering in the parking lot.

Cathy, the midwife,  arrived and  we all hustled into the center and began preparation. There hasn’t been a birth that I’ve photographed yet that the mother didn’t have music playing in the background, BUT this was the first time I was photographing a birth feeling like I was on a tropical Island as Jimmy Buffet sang in the background. Karine had perfect relaxed breaths to get her through this natural birth. Something she can thank my favorite hypnobirthing master  Muneeza Ahmed of Lets’ Birth Calmly  for coaching her to do. An  hour and a half later just as Margaritaville was finishing up  Lucian Alan was born @ 9:27pm on 3/3/13 @ 8lbs 1oz and 21 1/5 inches. As ironic as it may be, his big sister was born to the same song.

Congratulations to all on such a beautiful healthy baby boy. I can’t wait to see you all soon and have a good laugh about this night again. Karine… I’ll bring the umbrellas and tropical drinks! 😉
